Motion Photography – Street Portraits from 8th Avenue NYC
Motion photography is the art of taking photos without having to stop, focus, meter & click. It is where both the photographer & the subject are in motion.
Most of the time, during motion photography, you would not get enough time to compose – so getting a good quality motion photo depends on how well you can predict the subject’s behavior & how well you can compose without having to see through the view finder!
These motion photos are from 8th Avenue New York City, one of the most popular strips in NYC. These 8th Avenue street portraits are taken from the hip with a handheld Nikon D200, set in manual mode.
A fast wide angle lens like the 17mm – 35mm Nikon or the 35mm Nikon lens is the best for these motion photos. I prefer the prime lenses since they reduce the camera shake or the lens telescoping while handling. The subjects were photographed in motion along the 8th Avenue, NYC.
Motion photography is significantly different from any sort of secretive photography, since the camera is completely visible & within the notice of the people around you. Moreover, the photos are shot from very up close, usually within a few feet of the subject, making it difficult to construct a photograph by concealing the camera.
